How Your Venue Should Shape Your Gown

The most beautiful gown in the wrong setting still fights you all day. We always ask about the venue before we discuss silhouette.
Gardens and Winelands lawns
Grass grabs heavy trains and stains hems. Lighter fabrics, a shorter or bustled train and a hem finish that can be lifted make the day easier. Soft tulle photographs beautifully in open light.
Beaches and coastal venues
Wind is the deciding factor. Fluid fabrics move gracefully, very full skirts do not. A secured veil or no veil at all is often the wiser choice.
Mosques and places of worship
Full coverage, comfortable sleeves and a length that behaves when you sit or kneel. Plan for shoes coming off and on and for how the gown looks from behind, since that is what many guests will see.
Ballrooms and formal venues
This is where structure and drama are rewarded. Cathedral trains, duchess satin and full skirts belong in spaces with the height and floor to hold them.
Ceremony and reception in two places
If you are moving between venues, design for the transition. A detachable skirt or removable cape means you are not travelling in the full look.
